Up to $5,000 University of Hawaii Data Breach Settlement

What happened

Class period: August 31, 2025 through November 2, 2026

• On or about August 31, 2025, a third party accessed University of Hawai'i Cancer Center (UHCC) servers that support research at its epidemiology division
• Files with Private Information were accessed, including names, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and research information
• The affected data was in research files, not in medical records for patients treated at or with UHCC
• Plaintiffs sued the University of Hawai'i on behalf of people notified that their information may have been compromised
• The University denies wrongdoing but agreed to a $3,500,000 settlement
• The case is In re University of Hawai'i Data Breach Litigation, Civil No. 1CCV-26-0000280, in the First Judicial Circuit Court of Hawai'i

Who may qualify

• You are a living person in the United States
• You were notified that your Private Information was potentially compromised in the August 2025 University of Hawai'i data incident
• Judges on the case, the University and its affiliates, and its current officers and Board of Regents members (with certain family members) are excluded

How to file

1. Find the Unique ID and PIN on the email or printed Notice you received
2. If you did not get a Notice or lost it, contact the Settlement Administrator by mail or at 1-877-417-7187
3. Go to the Submit a Claim page and log in with your Unique ID and PIN
4. Verify your identity and choose Cash Payment A or Cash Payment B, plus Medical Data Monitoring if you want it
5. Upload documents if you choose Cash Payment A
6. Or download the paper Claim Form, sign it, date it, and mail it early enough to arrive by November 2, 2026

Proof required

• No documents are needed for Cash Payment B or Medical Data Monitoring
• Cash Payment A requires reasonable documentation, such as phone records, emails, letters, or receipts
• Your own written statements or affidavits do not count as documentation, but can add context
• Keep copies of everything, since claims may be audited
• If your Cash Payment A claim is invalid and not fixed, it is processed as Cash Payment B

Payment timing

Benefits are provided after the Court grants final approval and the settlement becomes final. The payment method has not been announced -- check https://uhdatasettlement.com/ for updates.

• The $50 Alternate Cash amount is an estimate and may go up or down based on how many people file
• Class Counsel may ask for up to one-third of the fund ($1,166,666.67) plus costs, and up to $2,000 for each class representative
• You cannot claim losses already paid by another source, including the credit monitoring offered in the notice letter
• The release covers the University, the State of Hawai'i, and their affiliates
• Opt-out requests must be mailed and personally signed; phone and email opt-outs are not accepted
