What happened

  • Two policyowners sued Transamerica Life Insurance Company (TLIC) in a class action called Wren, et al. v. Transamerica Life Insurance Company, Case No. 5:21-cv-00178-JGB-SP (C.D. Cal.)
  • Plaintiffs allege TLIC failed to credit certain Cash Value Increases (CVIs) tied to Direct Recognition Life (DRL) policies and failed to act in good faith about those credits
  • TLIC denies any wrongdoing and says it followed the policy terms and the law. The Court has not decided who is right
  • Both sides agreed to settle to avoid the cost and delay of more litigation
  • The settlement affects people who own or owned DRL-10 and DRL-11 universal life policies that were in effect on January 1, 2016

  • If you opt out by October 2, 2026, you get no cash payment but keep the right to sue TLIC on your own
  • Objecting is different from opting out. Objecting means you stay in the class and tell the Court what you dislike about the deal
  • The Court may move the hearing without mailing new notices, so check the official site for updates
  • Do not contact the Court. Use the Settlement Administrator or Class Counsel
  • Watch for scams. No one from this settlement will ask you to pay a fee to get your check

FAQ

Do I need to file a claim?
No. If TLIC records show you are entitled to a payment, JND Legal Administration mails you a check. There is no form, no receipt hunt, and no upload screen.
Who qualifies for this settlement?
You qualify if you own or owned a TLIC universal life policy that was in effect on January 1, 2016, and the policy was a Direct Recognition Life 10 or 11 (DRL-10 or DRL-11) set up under a Group Master Policy, Group Insurance Certificate, and Issue Illustration.
How much money will I get?
There is no flat amount. TLIC is funding $110 million. After administration costs, service awards up to $25,000 per class representative, and attorney fees of up to one-third of the gross settlement benefits, the rest is split under a Court-approved Plan of Allocation. Your share depends on the value of the qualifying CVIs tied to your policy.
What is the deadline?
There is no claim deadline. October 2, 2026 is the deadline to opt out or to object. If you want the money, that date is one you get to ignore.
When will payments go out?
After the Court grants final approval at the November 9, 2026 hearing and any appeals are finished. Appeals can add time, so there is no set payment date.
What do I lose if I stay in?
You give up the right to sue TLIC over the CVI credits and TLIC's good faith on those credits. Claims for a death benefit unrelated to unpaid CVIs, other policy terms unrelated to CVIs, and claims to enforce the settlement are not released.
What if my address changed?
Email or mail the Settlement Administrator with the case name, your full name, current address, and previous address. Address updates cannot be taken by phone.
