Benefit Repayment of your eligible Western Union fraud loss from the DOJ remission fund, minus any refund already received.

What happened

Class period: January 1, 2004 through March 9, 2020. Petitions previously limited to the January 1, 2004 through January 19, 2017 window have been extended to cover this full period.

  • In January 2017, Western Union entered a deferred prosecution agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, admitting it violated the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-fraud laws by processing hundreds of thousands of transactions tied to an international consumer fraud scheme.
  • Fraudsters used scams including the grandparent scam (posing as a relative in urgent need of money), lottery and sweepstakes scams (claiming the victim won a prize but owed fees), and romance scams (posing as an online love interest). Victims were directed to send money through Western Union and never received the promised cash, prize, or item.
  • Western Union agreed to forfeit $586 million to compensate victims through a process called "remission," overseen by the DOJ. The petition window has now been extended to cover transfers made between January 1, 2004 and March 9, 2020.

FAQ

Who qualifies for the Western Union remission?
You qualify if you sent money through Western Union between January 1, 2004 and March 9, 2020 and were the victim of fraud -- a grandparent scam, lottery or sweepstakes scam, or romance scam, for example. If the DOJ mailed you a pre-filled petition, you have already been flagged as a likely victim.
How much money can I get back?
Your eligible loss, minus any refund you already received. The payment is based only on the amount you wired, not on Western Union fees, incidental costs, or money sent through other companies.
What is the deadline to file?
August 19, 2026. Petitions must be submitted online or postmarked by that date. Late mailed petitions are accepted only at the Justice Department's discretion.
Is this a scam itself? Why does the government want my Social Security number?
It is legitimate -- this is a U.S. Department of Justice remission process run through an official administrator. Your SSN or ITIN is required so your payment can be checked against the Treasury Offset Program for any federal or state debts. It is a fair question to ask, especially if you were burned once already.
Do I need a lawyer or have to pay a fee?
No to both. The DOJ does not charge anything to participate, and you do not need an attorney to file.
When will I get paid?
The DOJ cannot give an estimated date and asks petitioners to check the official site for updates. Government refund timelines are not famous for their speed, so patience is part of the deal.
