What happened

Class period: Model year 2018 through 2022 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles with a 3.6 liter engine. Reimbursement covers repairs paid before July 6, 2026, and within 8.5 years or 85,000 miles from the vehicle's in-service date.

• The lawsuit says the main engine water pump can fail early, which can cause a coolant leak and require repair or replacement
• Volkswagen denies the claims and says the vehicles are not defective. The court has not ruled for either side
• Both sides agreed to a settlement. Owners and lessees get an extended warranty, and people who already paid for the repair can ask for money back
• Not every 2018 to 2022 Atlas is covered. Coverage is set by VIN, so you check your own vehicle on the official site

Who may qualify

• You bought or leased a 2018 to 2022 Volkswagen Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport with a 3.6 liter engine
• You bought or leased the vehicle in the United States or Puerto Rico
• Your VIN comes back as covered in the settlement VIN lookup
• For money back, you paid out of pocket for a water pump repair before July 6, 2026, and within 8.5 years or 85,000 miles of the vehicle's in-service date
• You are not a used car dealer, a commercial reseller, an insurer, or another excluded party

How to file

1. Enter your VIN in the VIN lookup on the official settlement site to confirm your vehicle is covered
2. Download the Claim Form from the Documents page, or call 1-888-227-1902 or email the administrator to request one
3. Complete, sign, and date the form under penalty of perjury
4. Attach your repair invoice, proof of payment, and proof of ownership if you did not receive a notice
5. Mail the form and documents by first class mail, postmarked no later than October 5, 2026
6. Keep a copy of everything you send

Proof required

• A repair invoice or record showing your name, the vehicle make, model, and VIN, the dealer or shop name and address, the repair date, the mileage at repair, the work performed, and the parts and labor charged
• Proof that you paid, including the amount paid
• Proof you owned or leased the vehicle at the time of the repair, if the notice was not sent to you
• For a head gasket claim, the invoice must state the repair was done because of a coolant leak or low coolant
• For a non-dealer repair during the original warranty period, proof you first asked an authorized VW dealer to do the work and were turned down, or a signed declaration saying you tried

Payment timing

If your claim is approved, payment is mailed within 150 days of either the date the administrator receives your complete claim or the date the settlement becomes final, whichever is later. Final approval is set for September 10, 2026, and appeals can push that date back.

• There is no online claim form. Every claim has to be printed, signed, and mailed
• The warranty extension starts July 6, 2026, and applies on its own. You do not file a claim to get it
• The warranty extension transfers to the next owner as long as the time and mileage limits have not run out
• Your reimbursement is reduced by any goodwill credit, insurance payment, or extended warranty payment you already received. If the repair was free or fully covered, you get nothing
• Damage from abuse, crashes, vandalism, modifications, or the wrong coolant does not qualify
