Toyota Airbag Control Unit Settlement -- File a Claim by December 11, 2028
By eosguide editorial · Last updated
Own or owned a 2011-2019 Corolla, Tacoma, Tundra, and more? Toyota's $78.5M ZF-TRW airbag settlement pays recall costs plus up to $250. Claims open through December 11, 2028. A rare class action that gives you years to file instead of weeks, so there's no excuse to leave it parked.
What happened
Class period: The class includes anyone who owned, leased, or previously owned or leased a Subject Vehicle as of July 31, 2023. The covered model years range from 2011 through 2019 depending on the model.
- The lawsuit alleges that certain Toyota vehicles were sold with a defective ZF-TRW airbag control unit (ACU), an electrical component that manages safety features including the airbags.
- Plaintiffs claim the ACUs in the Subject Vehicles are vulnerable to an "electrical overstress" condition that can cause airbags and other passenger safety systems to malfunction in a crash, potentially leading to airbag non-deployment.
- Toyota denies all the claims and any wrongdoing, and the Court did not decide who was right. Both sides agreed to a $78.5 million settlement. The Court granted final approval in November 2023, and after an appeal was dismissed in December 2025, the settlement is now final and being implemented.

Extra details
- The Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia models were not part of the original recall, so their owners cannot claim out-of-pocket recall expenses yet, but they can still register for the residual payment of up to $250
- Recalled Vehicles that complete the recall get a 12-year Extended New Parts Warranty automatically, and it transfers to a new owner if the car is sold
- You can file a separate out-of-pocket claim for each Recalled Vehicle you own, as long as the expenses are not duplicated
- The settlement does not release claims for personal injury, wrongful death, or physical property damage (other than damage to the ACU itself)
- Owners of 2020-2023 Tacomas and 2018 Tundras are NOT in this class, despite some receiving an initial notice in error
- Co-Lead Counsel are Roland Tellis of Baron & Budd and David Stellings of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein
