Benefit Reimbursement of recall-related out-of-pocket costs, a residual payment of up to $250, plus an extended warranty and inspection program.

What happened

Class period: The class includes anyone who owned, leased, or previously owned or leased a Subject Vehicle as of July 31, 2023. The covered model years range from 2011 through 2019 depending on the model.

  • The lawsuit alleges that certain Toyota vehicles were sold with a defective ZF-TRW airbag control unit (ACU), an electrical component that manages safety features including the airbags.
  • Plaintiffs claim the ACUs in the Subject Vehicles are vulnerable to an "electrical overstress" condition that can cause airbags and other passenger safety systems to malfunction in a crash, potentially leading to airbag non-deployment.
  • Toyota denies all the claims and any wrongdoing, and the Court did not decide who was right. Both sides agreed to a $78.5 million settlement. The Court granted final approval in November 2023, and after an appeal was dismissed in December 2025, the settlement is now final and being implemented.

Extra details

  • The Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia models were not part of the original recall, so their owners cannot claim out-of-pocket recall expenses yet, but they can still register for the residual payment of up to $250
  • Recalled Vehicles that complete the recall get a 12-year Extended New Parts Warranty automatically, and it transfers to a new owner if the car is sold
  • You can file a separate out-of-pocket claim for each Recalled Vehicle you own, as long as the expenses are not duplicated
  • The settlement does not release claims for personal injury, wrongful death, or physical property damage (other than damage to the ACU itself)
  • Owners of 2020-2023 Tacomas and 2018 Tundras are NOT in this class, despite some receiving an initial notice in error
  • Co-Lead Counsel are Roland Tellis of Baron & Budd and David Stellings of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein

FAQ

Who qualifies for the Toyota airbag settlement?
You qualify if you owned, leased, or previously owned or leased one of the Subject Vehicles as of July 31, 2023. Covered models include the 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Corolla Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, 2013-2018 Avalon HV, 2012-2019 Tacoma, 2012-2017 Tundra, and 2012-2017 Sequoia. The VIN lookup tool on the official site settles it in seconds.
How much money can I get?
If you have a Recalled Vehicle, you can be reimbursed for documented recall costs like towing, rental cars, childcare, repairs, and lost wages. On top of that, any Subject Vehicle owner can register for a residual payment of up to $250, even if the car was never recalled.
What is the deadline to file?
December 11, 2028. That is not a typo. This settlement gives you years rather than the usual few weeks, which is a nice change from the class actions that expect you to read the fine print before your coffee gets cold.
Can I still opt out or object?
No. Those windows closed back in October 2023, and the settlement received final approval after an appeal was dismissed in December 2025. The only action left is filing a claim.
My Tacoma wasn't recalled. Am I out of luck?
Not entirely. The Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia were not part of the original recall, so you cannot claim recall expenses yet. But you can still register for the residual payment of up to $250, and if a recall is issued for your model later, reimbursement opens up.
When will I get paid?
Payments are going out on a rolling basis now that the settlement is final. Online filers get the payment method they picked; paper filers get a check. The residual amount is calculated after the reimbursement claims are settled, so the exact figure firms up over time.
