Metropolis Parking Settled with Tennessee for $8.75M. Here's Your Cut.

The Tennessee Attorney General investigated Metropolis after 300+ complaints about surprise charges, impossible refunds, and notices designed to look like government mail. The settlement cost $8.75 million. Metropolis describes the resulting parking credits as a way to "recognize and celebrate" Tennessee drivers.

TL;DR

Tennessee AG Jonathan Skrmetti settled with Metropolis Technologies for $8.75 million in January 2026. If you have a Tennessee license plate and an active Metropolis membership, two $15 parking credits are already in your account โ€” log in at app.metropolis.io to use them. The credits run until $2.25 million in funds is exhausted, so don't wait. A separate cash refund program for past overcharges (July 1, 2021 โ€“ January 6, 2026) is coming โ€” the AG's office will announce how to file when ready.

What did Metropolis actually do wrong in Tennessee?

Metropolis operates parking lots across Nashville, Knoxville, and Memphis using license plate reader technology โ€” you drive in, a camera logs your plate, you pay at the end without a ticket. In theory, frictionless. In practice, the AG's investigation found a list of problems that reads less like an accident and more like a business model.

Investigators found the company posted inaccurate pricing signs, then charged whatever the actual rate was. Technology glitches generated charges for sessions that hadn't happened or had already been paid. When customers asked for refunds, the process was constructed to absorb complaints without resolving them. The violation notices were formatted to imply government affiliation.

The company called all of this "long-past operational issues." The settlement was signed in January 2026.

Do I qualify for the free Metropolis parking credits in Tennessee?

The Tennessee Parking Program launched April 2, 2026. To qualify, you need all three of the following:

๐Ÿš—
Tennessee license plate Your vehicle must be registered in Tennessee. Rental vehicles are excluded.
๐Ÿ‘ค
Active Metropolis membership Free to join at app.metropolis.io. You can sign up during a parking visit and still apply the credit to that session.
๐Ÿ“ง
Confirmed email + payment method on file Both must be attached to your account before the offer can be applied.

Each qualifying account gets two separate $15 credits. They must be used on different visits and don't stack โ€” but they can be combined with validations. If your parking bill is under $15, the leftover does not carry forward to your next visit.

How to claim your two $15 Metropolis parking credits

1๏ธโƒฃ
Log in at app.metropolis.io Go to the Promotions tab in your account dashboard. If the credits are there, you're already eligible โ€” no promo code required.
2๏ธโƒฃ
Drive into a participating lot The program covers most Metropolis Vision and Scan to Pay locations statewide. Resident-only and valet facilities are excluded. Check the participating lot map โ†’
3๏ธโƒฃ
Tap "Claim" when the prompt appears During your visit (before you exit), you'll see an offer prompt in the app or via notification. Open it and tap Claim โ€” the discount applies automatically.
4๏ธโƒฃ
Exit and review your final charge Your saved payment method is charged at the end of the session. The discount and final total will both be visible before payment.
Important: You must actively apply the credit during your session by toggling the slider in the Promotions tab. Credits not claimed before you exit will not apply retroactively.

Can I get a cash refund for past Metropolis overcharges in Tennessee?

Yes โ€” if you parked at a Metropolis lot in Tennessee between July 1, 2021, and January 6, 2026, and believe you were overcharged and never received a refund, you may be eligible to file a claim with the Tennessee AG's office for actual money back.

The AG's investigation found that Metropolis had made refunds "nearly impossible" to obtain. Under the settlement, the company must now evaluate each request individually โ€” a standard so foundational it required a court order to introduce.

The process for filing those claims has not yet been announced as of publication. AG Skrmetti's office will make a public announcement once the claims portal is live. The settlement funds designated for consumer refunds are separate from the $2.25 million parking credit pool.

What else does the Metropolis settlement require the company to do?

Beyond the money, Metropolis is required to implement the following permanent operational changes. Several of them describe practices that most people, upon parking somewhere, simply assume are already in place.

๐Ÿชง
Accurate signage at every lot entrance Current rates and customer support phone number must be posted and kept current. Charging more than what's posted is prohibited.
๐Ÿ“ฑ
Text message with rate upon entry At license plate reader locations, drivers now receive an immediate text with the current parking rate when they pull in.
โฑ๏ธ
15-minute grace period At Vision locations, drivers who enter and exit within 15 minutes are not charged โ€” no more surprise fees for wrong turns.
๐Ÿ”„
Automatic refunds for tech glitches When Metropolis's own technology malfunctions and wrongfully charges a consumer, a refund must be issued automatically.
๐Ÿšซ
No more government-impersonating notices Metropolis must stop designing notices that imply affiliation with any local or state government agency.
