Teva, Granules, and Heritage are settling for $5.55 million over claims their generic metformin was contaminated with NDMA. File by July 10, 2026. If you paid for generic metformin between 2015 and 2020, turns out the drug had more in it than advertised -- and not the good kind of bonus.

Main deadline July 10, 2026
Benefit A pro-rata share of the $5.55 million settlement fund, based on your metformin purchases during the class period.

What happened

Class period: July 20, 2015 through June 2, 2020

  • Generic metformin drugs sold by Teva, Granules, and Heritage were allegedly contaminated with N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a substance that does not meet FDA standards for metformin
  • The manufacturers are accused of falsely advertising these drugs as equivalent to brand-name Glucophage and Glucophage XR when they were not
  • Consumers and third-party payors such as health insurers paid for drugs they claim they would not have purchased had they known about the contamination
  • Three companies have agreed to settle: Teva for $3 million and Granules and Heritage jointly for $2.55 million, totaling $5.55 million
  • The lawsuit does not include personal injury or wrongful death claims -- this settlement covers only the economic harm of paying for an adulterated product
  • The case continues against non-settling defendants Amneal Pharmaceuticals and Walmart

FAQ

Who qualifies for this settlement?
You may qualify if you paid for a generic metformin-containing drug for personal or household use that was manufactured, distributed, or sold by Teva, Granules, or Heritage between July 20, 2015 and June 2, 2020. Health insurers and self-insured health and welfare plans that reimbursed metformin purchases during that period may also qualify as third-party payors.
How much money will I receive?
The exact amount is unknown at this time. Payments will be distributed pro rata from the combined $5.55 million fund after attorneys' fees of up to 34%, administrative costs, taxes, and service awards are deducted. Your share depends on how much you paid for metformin during the class period and how many total valid claims are submitted. File anyway -- unclaimed money helps no one.
What is the deadline to file a claim?
The deadline is July 10, 2026. You can file online at inremetforminsettlement.com/file-a-claim/ or mail a paper form so it is received by that date.
Do I need proof of purchase to file?
Individual consumers are not required to submit documentation at the time of filing. However, you should keep any pharmacy receipts or purchase records from the class period in case the Claims Administrator requests them. Third-party payors filing claims of $100,000 or more are required to include transaction data.
Does this settlement cover personal injury or health-related harm?
No. This lawsuit and settlement address only the economic harm of paying for a drug that allegedly did not meet FDA standards. Personal injury and wrongful death claims are not part of this case.
What if I want to opt out of the settlement?
Submit a written exclusion request by email or first-class mail postmarked no later than July 10, 2026. Your request must include your name, address, phone number, proof of class membership, and your signature. You cannot opt out by phone. If you exclude yourself, you receive no payment but retain the right to pursue your own legal action against the Settling Defendants.
Is this settlement legitimate?
Yes. The case is pending in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey (Case No. 20-cv-02334-MCA-MAH), overseen by Judge Madeline C. Arleo. The administrator is A.B. Data, Ltd. File only through the official site at inremetforminsettlement.com.
