Equifax duplicate account settlement: claim up to $600 with no proof, plus six months of free credit monitoring. File by September 1, 2026. Part of the remedy is six months of Equifax's own credit monitoring product, so the company that listed your debt twice now gets to watch your file for you.

What happened

Class period: August 2022 through September 2022, when Equifax mailed the Duplicate Reporting Letter

  • Charmayne Bradberry sued Equifax Information Services, LLC after she says the company listed the same collection account more than once on her Equifax credit report.
  • The lawsuit claims this broke the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, specifically section 1681e(b). That rule requires credit bureaus to use reasonable procedures to keep consumer reports as accurate as possible.
  • A duplicate collection account can make one debt look like two. That can drag down a credit score and make a person look deeper in debt than they really are.
  • In August and September 2022, Equifax mailed letters to consumers telling them they may have had a duplicate collection account in their file at a time when someone had pulled their credit. The settlement calls this the Duplicate Reporting Letter.
  • About 37,000 people are in the settlement class.
  • Equifax denies doing anything wrong and denies breaking the law. It agreed to settle to avoid the cost and risk of a longer court fight.
  • Equifax agreed to fund a $2,200,000 settlement, give every class member six months of free credit monitoring, and keep its corrected practices in place for six months.
  • The case is Bradberry v. Equifax Information Services, LLC, Case No. 1:22-CV-04754-MLB, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, before Judge Michael L. Brown.

Extra details

  • This is not the 2017 Equifax data breach settlement. That case was about hackers stealing personal data. This one is about the same debt being listed twice on a credit report.
  • The credit monitoring is automatic. Every class member gets six months of Equifax Complete without filing anything.
  • All three deadlines land on the same day, September 1, 2026: claims, opt-outs, and objections.
  • Opt-out requests go to a different address than the general administrator mail: Bradberry v. Equifax, c/o Settlement Administrator, ATTN: Exclusion Request, P.O. Box 58220, Philadelphia, PA 19102.
  • The $600 figure is a ceiling, not a promise. The fund is $2.2 million, about 37,000 people are in the class, and attorney fees of $733,333.33 plus up to $75,000 in costs and administration expenses come out first. Payments shrink as more people file.
  • Equifax also agreed to remove the duplicate collection accounts caused by this issue and to keep its corrected practices for six months.
  • Class Counsel's fee request was scheduled to post to the settlement website on July 28, 2026.
  • Do not contact Equifax or the court with questions. Use the settlement administrator.

FAQ

Who qualifies for the Equifax duplicate account settlement?
You qualify if you received a postcard or email notice about this settlement. Equifax records show it mailed roughly 37,000 people a letter in August or September 2022 saying a duplicate collection account may have appeared in their file. Those people are the class.
Is this the Equifax data breach settlement?
No. That was the 2017 hack. This case is about Equifax listing the same collection account twice on credit reports, which the lawsuit says broke the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Different case, different money, different deadline.
How much money can I get?
Up to $600. The exact amount depends on how many people file, so it may come in lower. The fund is $2.2 million and attorney fees and administration costs come out before payments are calculated.
Do I need proof to file?
No documents are needed. You log in with the Notice ID from your notice, which starts with EQB, plus the PIN. You confirm that the duplicate reporting harmed you and submit.
What is the deadline?
September 1, 2026. That same date is also the deadline to opt out or object, so there is only one date to remember.
I lost my notice. Can I still file?
You need the Notice ID and PIN to log in online. Contact the administrator at 514-577-5973 or Info@duplicateaccountfcrasettlement.com to ask about your Notice ID.
What is the free credit monitoring worth?
Equifax Complete for six months, valued at $59.70, with up to $500,000 in coverage for certain out-of-pocket identity theft costs. Every class member gets it without filing a claim.
What happens if I do nothing?
You still get the six months of credit monitoring and you still benefit from the practice changes. You give up your right to sue Equifax over these claims. To get cash, file a claim.
How will I be paid?
By paper check mailed to the address Equifax has on file for you, unless you set up electronic payment on the Submit Claim page. If you have moved since 2022, update your address there or the check may go to the wrong place.
When will payments go out?
Not until after the Final Approval Hearing on October 6, 2026, and only after any appeals are resolved. Appeals can take months or longer.
Can I opt out?
Yes. Mail a written exclusion request by September 1, 2026 to Bradberry v. Equifax, c/o Settlement Administrator, ATTN: Exclusion Request, P.O. Box 58220, Philadelphia, PA 19102. Include the case name and number, your contact information, your signature, and the unique identifier from your notice. If you opt out, you get no cash and no credit monitoring.
