Benefit Cash reimbursement or a free repair for a wire failure that turned your in-door features into decorative buttons -- depending on when the failure happened and whether you are still dealing with it.

What happened

Class period: Refrigerators manufactured 2018–2021; Wire Harness Issues occurring between years 2 and 7 after the refrigerator's in-service date

Whirlpool manufactured certain side-by-side refrigerators between 2018 and 2021 under the Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and JennAir brand names. A defect in the wire harness -- a bundle of wires running to the freezer door -- caused the wires to break or fail, taking out the ice maker, ice dispenser, water dispenser, and control panel along with them. A refrigerator with all the premium in-door features and none of them working is, as it turns out, just an expensive box.

Plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit (Costa v. Whirlpool Corp., Case No. 1:24-cv-00188-MN) in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, alleging Whirlpool breached warranties, was negligent, and concealed the Wire Harness Issue. Whirlpool denies wrongdoing. Both sides agreed to settle to avoid the cost and risk of continued litigation.

Extra details

  • Whirlpool has searched its own records and is mailing tailored notices to customers already identified as having reported a Wire Harness Issue. If you received a targeted notice, you may not need to prove the failure occurred -- but you will still need to document your out-of-pocket costs.
  • If your repair involved wire splicing or wire reconnection, you may be entitled to additional benefits on top of the repair cost reimbursement. Check the FAQ at refrigeratorsettlement.com/faqs for details.
  • For future Wire Harness Issues: do not repair or replace anything before contacting Whirlpool or the Settlement Administrator. Showing up with a receipt for work already done is the one move that costs you coverage you still had coming.
  • This settlement does not release personal injury claims or property damage claims for anything other than the refrigerator itself.
  • Watch for scams. Only use the official site: refrigeratorsettlement.com.

FAQ

Which refrigerators are covered by this settlement?
Certain Whirlpool-manufactured side-by-side refrigerators built between 2018 and 2021 under the Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and JennAir brand names. Not every model qualifies -- you need to check your specific model and serial number at refrigeratorsettlement.com to confirm eligibility.
What is a Wire Harness Issue?
A failure or breakage of wires running to the freezer door that causes one or more in-door features -- including the ice maker, ice dispenser, water dispenser, and/or control panel -- to stop working.
How much can I get?
It depends on when the failure occurred and what you did about it. If you already paid to repair the refrigerator, you may claim 35%–75% of that repair cost. If you replaced the refrigerator, you may claim 25%–50% of the original purchase price. If you have a current Wire Harness Issue and have not yet repaired it, you can choose between a free replacement door (with labor for earlier failures) or a cash payment of 30%–50% of the original purchase price.
What is the deadline to file?
November 2, 2026 for past and preexisting Wire Harness Issues. For issues that arise after May 5, 2026, you must contact Whirlpool or the Settlement Administrator within 90 days of discovering the problem -- and before you make any repairs.
Do I need to provide proof?
Yes. You need to submit your refrigerator's model and serial numbers, proof of purchase or acquisition, and documentation of any out-of-pocket costs. Some documentation requirements can be satisfied with a signed declaration rather than receipts. If Whirlpool already has a record of your complaint, you may be identified as a Prequalified Class Member and will not need to prove the failure separately.
What if my refrigerator has a Wire Harness Issue right now but I have not fixed it yet?
You are eligible for the preexisting issue benefits. You can choose a free replacement door (plus labor if the failure occurred in years 2 through 4) or a cash payment based on a percentage of the original purchase price. File a claim at refrigeratorsettlement.com/submit-claim by November 2, 2026.
What if my refrigerator develops a Wire Harness Issue in the future?
If the issue occurs after May 5, 2026 and within seven years of your refrigerator's in-service date, you may still be covered. Contact Whirlpool at 1-844-667-2929 or refset2026@whirlpool.com -- or the Settlement Administrator at info@RefrigeratorSettlement.com -- within 90 days of discovering the issue, and before making any repairs.
Can I opt out of the settlement?
Yes. You must mail an opt-out request to the Settlement Administrator postmarked by June 2, 2026. If you opt out, you will not receive any settlement benefits but retain the right to pursue your own lawsuit against Whirlpool for these claims.
Does this settlement cover personal injury or other property damage?
No. The settlement only covers economic losses related to the refrigerator itself. Personal injury claims and damage to other property are not released by this settlement.
