Benefit Reimbursement for out-of-pocket crankset replacement costs, plus an automatic warranty extension through July 2027.

What happened

Class period: Cranksets manufactured before July 2019; qualifying replacements made before September 21, 2023.

  • In September 2023, Shimano voluntarily recalled certain Hollowtech II cranksets manufactured before July 2019 due to a risk of bonding separation and delamination — which, for a component called "Dura-Ace," is not a great look
  • Plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit alleging the recall was inadequate and that Shimano and major bike retailers (Specialized, Trek, and Giant) misrepresented their products
  • A settlement has been reached providing reimbursement for out-of-pocket replacement costs, plus an extended warranty for still-affected cranksets through July 2027

  • Your crankset has one of the eligible production codes (KF through RF — full list on the official settlement site and the CPSC recall page)

How to file

  1. 1. Visit the official Shimano crankset settlement website
  2. 2. Click "Start Your Claim"
  3. 3. Upload documentation of your original purchase and your replacement costs
  4. 4. Submit online by August 4, 2026 — or mail your claim form postmarked by August 4, 2026

Proof required

  • Proof of original purchase: a receipt, invoice, or photo of the crankset clearly showing the serial number and production code
  • Proof of replacement costs: receipt or invoice for your replacement crankset and/or installation labor
  • No paperwork? You can submit a signed declaration under penalty of perjury — because apparently some of us don't keep receipts for $500 bike components

Payment timing

Reimbursement will be issued after the court grants final approval of the settlement. Check the settlement homepage for status updates — patience is a virtue, even if your crankset wasn't.

FAQ

Which Shimano cranksets are included in the settlement?
Shimano Ultegra FC-6800, FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-9000, FC-R9100, and FC-R9100-P cranksets manufactured before July 2019, with production codes KF through RF. Photos showing where to find the production code are available on the CPSC recall page linked from the settlement site.
Do I need to file a claim to get the extended warranty?
No — the warranty extension through July 29, 2027 is automatic for eligible cranksets. You only need to file if you want reimbursement for out-of-pocket replacement costs.
What if I replaced my crankset but don't have the receipt?
You may submit a signed declaration under penalty of perjury in place of a receipt. The option is built right into the online claim form, so you won't need to track down a piece of paper from 2019.
My crankset is still on my bike — can I still benefit?
Yes. If your crankset is still within the warranty period, the extended warranty through July 2027 applies automatically. You don't need to do anything except maybe get it inspected at a participating retailer.
When will I get paid?
Reimbursement goes out after the court grants final approval. Keep an eye on the settlement homepage for updates. In the meantime, consider it motivation to keep the legs turning.
