Dodge Ram 1500 EcoDiesel EGR Cooler Settlement – File by May 16, 2026

FCA US is settling a class action lawsuit alleging that 2014–2019 Dodge Ram 1500 EcoDiesel trucks contained defective EGR coolers that could crack, leak coolant, and cause engine fires. If you bought or leased one of these trucks in the U.S., you may be entitled to reimbursement, a $3,000 fire payment, or at minimum a free warranty extension — no claim form required for the warranty. What happened

Class period: June 12, 2013 through October 23, 2019 (manufacturing dates of eligible trucks)

The 2014–2019 Dodge Ram 1500 EcoDiesel was marketed as a capable, efficient workhorse — which makes it somewhat ironic that its EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) cooler allegedly had a habit of cracking under thermal stress, leaking coolant into the intake manifold, and in some cases causing the engine to catch fire. A class action lawsuit alleged FCA US knew about the defect and failed to adequately address it. FCA US denies any wrongdoing but agreed to settle. Anyone who purchased or leased an eligible truck in the U.S. is included in the class, whether or not their cooler ever failed.

Extra details

The warranty extension follows the truck, not the owner — if you sold your eligible truck, the new owner benefits from it You do not need to present any settlement-related documents at the dealership to receive warranty service; just bring the truck The reimbursement pool is shared — $750,000 split among all valid claimants, so earlier is better than later Claims without third-party documentation will be rejected; a personal statement or affidavit alone is not sufficient

FAQ

My truck never had any EGR cooler problems. Am I still included?
Yes — and you're still entitled to the warranty extension. If your cooler fails within five years of a replacement under Recall VB1, the repair is covered. You don't need to have had problems to benefit from this settlement.
What exactly is an EGR cooler and how do I know if mine failed?
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation cooler reduces engine emissions by recirculating exhaust gases. In these trucks, it allegedly cracked under heat over time, leaking coolant in a place coolant has no business being. Signs of failure include overheating, white smoke, or coolant loss. If you experienced a fire, that's the more dramatic version.
What do I need to claim the $3,000 fire payment?
Proof that your eligible truck caught fire and that a failed EGR cooler caused it. Acceptable documentation includes a police report, fire department report, insurance report, or a vehicle repair record identifying the EGR cooler or that area of the engine as the origin.
Is the $750,000 reimbursement fund enough to cover everyone?
Maybe. If total valid claims exceed $750,000, all payments are reduced proportionally. Filing sooner doesn't improve your share, but getting your documentation in order before the May 16 deadline does.
Do I need to do anything to get the warranty extension?
Nothing at all. If you own an eligible truck, the five-year warranty extension on EGR cooler repairs is automatic. Just take your truck to any FCA US authorized dealership if a repair becomes necessary.
